On Walden

As part of Madison and Spencer's American History class for the year, (we're still finishing up last year's Civil War Unit for the first month or so) we took two weeks to study some of the period appropriate writers and poets.  The kids loved reading poems from Emily Dickinson, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, and many others.  They also got an earful of Henry David Thoreau, one of my personal favorites.  And where else can you study Thoreau than on a quaint little pond.  I had the privilege of actually reading On Walden while floating on a tube in Walden Pond.  Since Nick wouldn't approve that home school field trip, we just had to improvise out at Harmon Lake.  Still, I think the kids got the gist of it....
