Well, with a few years of "soccer camp" under our belt, we thought it was finally time to get Spencer enrolled in a proper soccer league. He was so excited on his first night of practice,
and even more excited at his first game, especially after he managed to score a goal for his team. (Albeit somewhat miraculously!) After that goal, however, things went a little down hill. He was a full head shorter than any other player on his team, or the opposing team. Consequently, he had a lot of steps to make up when running with the taller boys. This started to really disourage him, but after a game or two, and some friendly coaching from his mom, dad, and Hoskins Grandparents, something in his demeanor suddenly changed. His confidence seemed to increase, his energy level shot up, and he stopped being so polite anytime another player tried to steal the ball. By the last game, it was universally agreed that he was the most improved player on the team. In fact, the whole bench was on their feet when he scored a goal in the final game. As Nick and I cheered, I heard the lady sitting next to me declare, "Oh, the little guy got the goal!" Yes he did. And he was so proud of himself that he spent a good three minutes doing a celebration dance across the field. Had it been a touchdown, there would have been a penalty for sure! Then we all had a good laugh when his coach finlly brought him back to the present by asking, "Hey Spencer, are you going keep on playing or what?" It was a perfect way to end the season, and we're so proud of Spencer for his willingness to try new things and step out of his comfort zone, especially because he is such a little guy.
Lucky for him, his good looks make up for anything he lacks in stature!
