Travel Log Update

Yes, our East Coast travel log continues to grow. This time we headed further south, taking a brief two-day trip to Colonial Williamsburg in the days Nick had off during the Thanksgiving weekend. We had considered visiting Plymouth Plantation during the holiday--the sight of the first Thanksgiving; however, after getting an invitation to spend Thanksgiving in Virginia, a southern stop-over seemed to make more sense. And who could resist slipping down to Colonial Williamsburg when the town would be decked out for the Christmas season! Though our time was limited, we did manage to see quite a lot while we were there. The evening we arrived we managed to squeeze in a few hours at the DeWitt Museum. I really enjoyed looking through the colonial clothing, table settings, and furniture. Sometimes I wonder why I wasn't born in that era. The men with us quite enjoyed the gun displays, and the children loved the "From a Child's Eyes" exhibit where they had toy trains and fabulous dollhouses on display. After taking in the museum, we ate dinner in an old colonial post office and capped off the night by driving around and looking at the holiday decorations on the lighted homes.

The next day, we started by taking a guided tour of the Governor's Palace. Here we are standing in front of the main entrance of the palace.





After the Governor's palace, we walked over to the historic courthouse and attended a mock trial in which Nicholas played the part of the accused. Gratefully he was found innocent of the charges presented against him and allowed to keep touring with us. Here are Nick and the kids before we attended the trial.

After the trial, we strolled down the streets of Williamsburg until we reached the capitol building. There we found hot chocolate and watched and listened to the fifes and drummers march through the streets in true colonial fashion.

What a beautiful time to pause and enjoy our history!

After the parade, we stopped into a variety of old time buildings including the apothecary, the printing office, and the doll and bonnet shops. It was truly a delightful day. And for those of you who wonder how we manage to do so much traveling with our three little children--well, let's be honest--we bribe them! Upon entering Williamsburg, the first thing the kids noticed were the horses, and as Maddi called them, the "Cinderella carriages." So, yep, you guessed it. We promised the kids a carriage ride at the end of the day if they would be cooperative and tolerate the many tours and hours of walking. I think we all turned out to be winners on this deal.

Following the carriage ride we attended a shadow puppet show, snapped a few shots of the kids in colonial garb, and headed back to Virgina. What a fabulous holiday weekend! And what darling little colonial babes!
