After spending three fun-filled days in California, it was time to load into our rental car and head to the McArthur's house for some good old rest and relaxation, not to mention a yummy Thanksgiving dinner. My mother; however, was quite concerned about surviving the eight-hour drive from California to Arizona. Consequently, we decided to break up the car time with a few stops. Obviously, the Scottsdale Fashion Place Mall was one of those stops. Earlier in the day, though, we detoured slightly and took in some more natural scenery at the lovely Joshua Tree National Park.
In researching this national park, the pictures weren't exactly my idea of beautiful, but I have to confess that once we were there, there was something slightly alluring about the hundreds of Joshua trees standing solemnly against the sandy desert landscape.

The kids were less impressed with the landscape; however, and more fascinated with the local wildlife.
They also appreciated the chance to get out of the car and hike around for a few hours.
There were a few times our hike got a little bit...er....narrow,

but in the end, we all managed to reach Skull Rock, the landmark on our map that the
kids most wanted to see.
We picniced in the shadow of the giant skull, and then loaded back into the car. The detour added a few hours to our day, so that we didn't end up arriving in Show Low until a little after midnight, but all in all, I think it was well worth our time.
